Weather & Viewing FAQ

How does the weather affect the sea lion count?

Sea lions are wild and accustomed to coastal conditions; they routinely remain on the docks during rain or fog. However, severe winter storms or high-surf events may prompt them to temporarily leave the docks for calmer waters or deeper feeding dives.

Is it good to visit when it's foggy?

Yes. San Francisco's famous summer fog cools the air, which can make the sea lions more comfortable as they lounge. While thick fog might slightly reduce visibility and photography range, it makes for a classic, atmospheric San Francisco experience.

Do I need to pack layers or windbreakers?

Highly recommended. The K-Dock viewing rail is directly exposed to marine winds coming off the Golden Gate and SF Bay. Even on warm days, the temperature at the rail can drop quickly. A windbreaker or layered fleece will keep you comfortable.
